About the book

The writers of the organization #JELNorwalk (Young Latin American Writers of Norwalk) wrote LETTERS TO THE PRESIDENT to talk about the issues that affect their lives and the possibilities of becoming owners of their destinies to contribute to the stable growth of the community, enjoy life, freedom, and happiness.This youth anthology is coordinated by Writer #JEL Emmanuel Salazar, a 12-year-old student, who invited his friends to accompany him on his quest to inform the president of the pressing problems of the families in the community.Writers were not given a specific topic about a social problem; they were simply asked if they were presidents, how they would improve their community.This is how this anthology has the letters of Valeria Mejia (12), Kiara G. Contreras (11), Keila J. Contreras (10), Yadira Campana (14), Monzerrat Campana (12), Alexander Hernandez (14), David Vera Robles (16), Jonathan Bonilla (13), Diego Gonzalez (15), Jennifer Chavez Madrigal (13), Laura Uicab (16), Esmeralda Linares (21), and Emmanuel J. Salazar-Lira (12).Each of them chose themes that, at their age, feel more relevant in their daily lives. Some young people focused on changes or reinforcements to the educational system stressing the benefits for bilingual or artistic development, others focused on the high costs of rents and among other issues, also explored the injustices of discrimination suffered by women in the sports field.The issue of homelessness was also a matter of serious concern for several of the writers as the number of homeless people increases every day despite government efforts. Seeing homeless people has become part of the daily routine of our writers because homeless people are on the streets of the city, at the entrance of supermarkets, or outside of schools. It is simply difficult for a child to understand why someone sleeps on the sidewalks in full view of all of us. Young people are often excluded from powerful negotiating tables by both parents and governments claiming that they are protecting them. In many cases, they end up being the victims of decisions made on their behalf.In the anthology LETTERS TO THE PRESIDENT, the #JELNorwalk writers present not only the problems but also offer alternative solutions to these problems from the perspective of young people between the ages of 10 and 19 years old.Government is an abstract concept that young people need to study better to understand that the main actor in government is a citizen like themselves, and members of the government are hired to serve the people and meet their needs according to the available resources.Congratulations to each of these literary activists who use letters to create a world for themselves and all of us.Writer #JEL Miriam BurbanoPresident and Founder Young Latin American [email protected]
