If you use KOReader, you may expect your Fable reading progress to update when you close an ebook. Fable lets readers track books and import Goodreads data, but its help pages do not describe a native KOReader connection.

There is a community option: as of September 26, 2026, ShelfSync lists progress and note syncing with Fable through its login/API. It is a separate KOReader plugin, not a Fable-built feature; check its current setup instructions before relying on it.

Using Fable’s documented features alone, you would update a book manually. To sync from KOReader, you need a separate community plugin such as ShelfSync rather than a built-in Fable setting.

Goodreads import is not KOReader sync

StoryGraph now offers a Kobo integration, but that is separate from a direct KOReader connection. Its official feature is specifically described as Kobo x StoryGraph, while a separate KOReader integration remains a distinct feature request. As of September 26, 2026, the community plugin ShelfSync lists KOReader progress and note syncing to StoryGraph; its README says the connection uses an unofficial session-cookie API that may break when StoryGraph changes its site.

If you read on a Kobo with KOReader installed, do not assume KOReader progress will appear in StoryGraph through the Kobo integration. The two reading environments can handle reading data differently.

Kobo sync and KOReader sync are different

A device integration usually depends on the reading app or service that reports activity. StoryGraph’s Kobo connection is for activity supported by Kobo’s integration. KOReader has its own Progress Sync feature, which shares positions across KOReader devices.

Those paths are not interchangeable. If you read in Kobo’s built-in reader, use StoryGraph’s current Kobo setup instructions. If you read the same device through KOReader, check whether the activity is actually being sent before relying on StoryGraph to record it.

A highlight made in KOReader is a note from your reading life. It is different from a public quote, review, or highlight made inside a reading app’s own ebook reader.

KOReader’s bundled Highlight Export plugin lists Readwise, Joplin, and local formats such as JSON, HTML, Markdown, or TXT; it does not list Goodreads or Fable as export destinations. A separate community plugin, ShelfSync, supports KOReader progress, status, and notes for both services. Its documentation describes adding a note from KOReader’s highlight menu, rather than bulk-exporting an existing library of highlighted passages. This is a community workflow, not a built-in Goodreads or Fable feature.

Why a file export is not the same as a reading archive

Exporting to a text or JSON file can be useful for backup. But a separate file may not keep each passage connected to the book, author, edition, progress, and reading history around it.

Keep highlights private and useful

KOReader can sync a book’s position between KOReader devices. The harder question is where that progress goes next. Can it update Goodreads, Fable, or StoryGraph without you opening each app and logging it again?

StoryGraph’s Kobo integration is worth separating from KOReader: it is a Kobo feature and does not guarantee that activity from KOReader on a Kobo will sync.

Choose a tracker that receives data from where you read

When your reader and tracker do not connect, you have two choices: keep updating progress by hand or use a tracker that can receive KOReader data.
