School councils can give children and young people the confidence firstly, to realise the contribution which they can make to their schools and society, and secondly, to speak out. Children who are listened to and expect to be heard will be safer. This report presents the results of a survey of schools by the NSPCC in partnership with School Council UK and the Advisory Centre for Education (ACE). Staff and pupils describe their experiences of setting up and taking part in school councils. Findings illustrate various approaches to the empowerment of children.
